The closing session of the American Institute for Conservation will feature a workshop on a radical vision for the future of a collaborative, more equitable conservation practice led by facilitators endawnis Spears, Chris Newell and Jason Mancini of the Akomawt Educational Initiative. Akomawt is dedicated to furthering knowledge of Native America through innovative learning approaches designed to impact how we engage with Indigenous histories, narratives and contemporary realities. This event--which foregrounds native autonomy, resilience and self-representation--is free and will be live-streamed. The mission of Untold Stories is to expand the existing ethical framework for art conservation by engaging new voices and hearing new stories that transform our understanding of the preservation of cultural heritage. We seek to recognize and conserve a broader range of cultural heritages; embrace a more diverse set of conservation practices and practitioners; and affirm the deep emotional connection between objects and sites of cultural heritage and the communities that claim them. Untold Stories is supported through generous funding by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
