58. Varnished Wall Maps: Attempt If You Dare

The complete treatment of American 19th Century varnished wall maps is a challenge in the field of paper conservation, particularly with the removal of the natural resin varnish coatings. There are many variables to consider due to their value as both decorative works and historically functioning artifacts, their size, and the complex media and materials used, i.e. paper, varnish, hand-applied color, printed ink, textiles, and wood. While paper conservators have treated these maps in various ways, little information appears in conservation literature.

In the summer of 2018 Heugh-Edmondson Conservation Services hosted a small workshop to collaborate with other conservators on the different techniques for treating these maps. The main focus of the workshop was using water baths on a severely fragmented wall map of The Unionwhich depicts the United States in 1856. In conjunction with this procedure a comparison study was completed on samples from another map, exploring the use of a suction table, solvents, or water baths as optional methods. The risks as well as the benefits were evaluated while developing the most appropriate treatment procedure for maps in various conditions.
