John Baty manages the research and development laboratory for the MediaPreserve and Bookkeeper Divisions of Preservation Technologies, L.P. (PTLP), which provides digital reformatting and deacidification products and services to libraries, archives, and businesses worldwide. He collaborates with PTLP’s engineering, operations, and logistics teams on process improvement, process economics, health and safety, and import/export regulation. He supports MediaPreserve production in sourcing and reformulating film and tape cleaners and lubricants. He also manages Bookkeeper mass deacidification quality control at corporate plants and the supply chain and operations of the PTLP chemistry production floor, which supplies ten mass deacidification plants and spray deacidification systems worldwide. Prior to joining PTLP, Baty held a joint appointment at Johns Hopkins University as Assistant Research Professor and Heritage Science for Conservation Scientist in the Department of Conservation and Preservation in the Sheridan Libraries and University Museums and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the Whiting School of Engineering. He has been a chemist at the National Archives and Records Administration, a research chemist at Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc., and a research assistant at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. He holds a Ph.D. in paper chemistry from the School of Materials at the University of Manchester in the U.K. and completed an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in conservation science at Johns Hopkins University.
