Caitlin Southwick is a stone conservator at the University of Amsterdam. She received a Professional Certificate in Conservation from Lorenzo de' Medici International Italian Institute in Florence after which she continued her studies at l'Accademia di Belle Art in Carrara. She then procured a Graduate Diploma in Conservation Practice at Cardiff University in Wales and will finish her Master's degree at University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She has interned at the Uffizi Gallery and at the Associazione Bastioni in Florence and was a student conservator at the first restoration project of the Moai statues on Easter Island in 2012. Throughout her academic career she has become interested in the duality of art conservation and conservation of the planet. In addition to her studies, Caitlin has focused on starting programs and initiatives to bring sustainability into everyday practice, especially amongst students at the education level. Caitlin began the group SSiC, Students for Sustainability in Conservation, which focuses on initiatives and ideas that can be implemented into everyday conservation practice and encourages students to begin to consider sustainability as part of their training. The group functions as an international forum to encourage collaboration, the exchange of ideas and to spread awareness. After graduating, Caitlin hopes to continue to encourage the promotion of sustainability in conservation and make saving cultural heritage also about saving the planet.
